Me Words and You Words

It’s Marketing 101 but we so often forget it that it bears repeating.

I don’t care about your company, your product or service, or that it’s new and improved, better tasting, smaller, lighter, faster, gets better mileage etc.  I care about me, my life, my time and my work.

I don’t want to Learn, Discover, Find, Help or anything like these because they all sound like work.  I’ve got enough of my own work to do, I don’t want to do yours for you too.

I do want, more time, less work, quick, easy, things that I don’t have to think too much about.

I never want to learn about how you can make my life better.  I always want to learn how my life will become better.

This blog post was prompted by an email I received from a company inviting me to view their new presentation titled: “What Every Social Media Marketer Should Know About XYZ Company”  Reading that title I couldn’t be more underwhelmed. Why?  Because it’s all about them, none of it is about me, unless I’m one of the “every”.   But I don’t think of myself as an every, I’m me.

The problem is we often think that our new stuff is something that everyone else will want to learn about.  But they don’t want to learn about it because learning is work.  And we don’t want to do more work, we just want simple stuff that makes our lives easier, not more complex.

Sell the benefits, not the features.  Go back and reread the last marketing piece you wrote.  Are talking about you or the customer?  Are you selling features or benefits?

Give me 1 Good Reason why you’re not doing a better job marketing your results instead of your stuff?
