A Way to Participate in Science- Giving Back

December 22nd, 2010 · 2 Comments

I’m a science geek. I watch the Science Channel all of the time and love to read about science and learn all I can about it. So I was jazzed to discover a bunch of “Citizen Science Projects” on the web that I can take part in.

I’m a space junkie. Since I couldn’t become an astronaut (bad eyes) I went into the next best thing I could think of at the time, for a poor kid from Ohio with no education- I joined the Navy and went into submarines. So that was a 6 year stint where I found out I really didn’t like people telling me what to do. But anyway, I never lost my love for science.

So I love the website Zooniverse.com where you can join several different science projects and do some real valuable work. I’ve personally classified over 2000 galaxies using Galaxy Zoo. Do it on my phone when I’ve got some down time and nothing else to do. You’re bound to find something more satisfying than tending your stupid farm, or killing mafia bad guys, or playing poker.

If that doesn’t work for you then try The Network For Citizen Science. Where you find all types of science projects for you and your kids to do. How about counting animals you see and logging them on your phone? Maybe not the best for people who live in NYC but for others it could be fun. Got a bird feeder? How about Feeder Watch? You can help ornithologists know about the birds in your back yard. You can help to measure and monitor ice at the North Pole and several other important, worthwhile projects from the comfort of your couch.

So quit playing that stupid game and start spending some quality time helping science make the world a better place.

Give me 1 Good Reason why you don’t put some of your time into science?
