Facemail is Coming!

November 16th, 2010 · 3 Comments

Facebook announced their  new integrated messaging system yesterday.  You can watch the announcement here or read it on the official announcement/blog post about the new messaging application.

I found these important points:

  • Integrates your communications with a person- not a message.
  • All messages with a single person are threaded in a single view, including email, Instant Messaging, and Text- SMS.
  • White listing for your inbox- only messages from your friends will appear in your inbox.  Messages from all others will be in an “Others” box.  But can be promoted to your Inbox if you choose.
  • The system will choose the best way to send a message to your recipient depending upon that person’s current connectivity to Facebook.  I.E. if the person is logged in and available to chat, your email may be converted into an IM for this message.  This seems like it may be confusing to many people.

One of the major unanswered questions is the Terms of Service (TOS) for Facebook.  Currently Facebook receives a permanent, irrevocable, copyright to everything you post.  Will that extent to emails you both send and receive?  What if you receive a document you’ve purchased such as a report or other intellectual property?  What if you send or receive confidential information in an email?  You could forward any email address to a FaceMail account and then all of the information received by that account will be subject to the Facebook TOS.

And of course the next new “shiny toy” for the cool kids in the coming months will be “Do you have a FaceMail invitation?”  Facebook has announced that the invitations will be offered to some, and recipients can then invite their Facebook Friends into the FaceMail system.

Give me 1 Good Reason why you’ll use FaceMail?

I can’t give you one… Not one good reason. Heck, I can’t even give you a bad reason. Not a fan, oh wait, I mean, I don’t like. Ehh… Whatever. There are a lot of sheep in the world, let’s see where they wander. (Or are those lemmings?)

Can’t think of a good reason either. Aside from not wanting to give any of my information to FB, why would I want every communication with one person linked? I was thrilled when gmail allowed us to “unthread” e-mails — I’m much happier reading one message at a time. Perhaps this will truly appeal to the younger generation (not sure how young that is), but I don’t see it being used for business communications.
