You’re about to be Unfollowed What’re you Gonna Do?

November 11th, 2010 · 4 Comments

Next Thursday is National UnFriend Day as declared by Jimmy Kimmel.

What can you do about it?  Well you could start monitoring your UnFriending  and UnFollowing for Facebook and Twitter.

How To Track UnFriending:

Facebook:

  1. First you need to install Grease Monkey in your Firefox Browser.
  2. Next you install the UnFriend Finder Script.
  3. It will modify your Facebook display to add an UnFriend Finder feature to Facebook for you.
  4. You need to leave it running because it’s not retroactive.  It only works going forward.

This tool will then tell you who unfriends you and when.  You could then manually go back and see what update it was that prompted them to unfriend you.  It doesn’t yet work for pages, but Facebook Insights has that fairly well covered.

Twitter: (there are several free offerings)

  1. Friend or Follow free service that allows you to view and understand all of your followers at once.
  2. Quitter free service that sends you and email once a day or once a week to tell you who quit following you.
  3. ChirpStats free service that sends you messages every few days to track followers and unfollows.

All of these will help you determine which tweets cause people to leave you.  And then you can easily just stop tweeting that stuff (yea, as IF!).

OK, in reality what you do with this info is up to you.  But I will be using it guide me in better being better at engaging my friends and acquaintances.  And getting to better learn what my audience expects of me.

And of course if you have questions on how to manage this stuff for your organization be sure to contact us here at 1 Good Reason today!

Give me 1 Good Reason why you won’t be paying attention to who is unfollowing and unfriending you ?

    Chris,

How about an “Unlike” monitoring script vs Unfriend?

I’d rather be unfollowed than have an inflated sense of how many people are actually paying attention to what I have to say.

    I won’t take it personally.

I plan to use the unfollow and unfriend information to try to understand why I lose people. This way I can better follow and understand the people who are still with me. To me it’s a path to better customer service for my readers.
