Lightning Fast Twitter Marketing

Quick reactions and round the clock monitoring allow Verizon to take advantage of the contract issues between Fox and Cablevision.  Verizon sitting in the wings watches this misstep by it’s rival Cablevision and see’s an opportunity.  It doesn’t appear that Comcast or Time Warner Cable have recognized the opportunity.

I expect this type of lightning reaction to any competitor’s misstep to become the norm in the future.

You should check out the Verizon FiOS NY twitter account to see they are talking nonstop to angry Cablevision customers int he NYC area.  There is little doubt that this kind of direct personal 1 on 1 marketing will change minds and convert customers.

Here is the conversation I had with Verizon FiOS NY this afternoon.

ckieff: So does anyone care that Cablevision and Fox are not showing the NY Giants Football game today?

I just sent out that tweet because I sitting down to watch the Giants game.

Several of my twitter followers including; @InduNan @TonyRomm @Steveology and @elizabethingber@FatBaldFrank all tried to get Verizon’s attention by sending similar tweets.  However, only @elizabethingber and @FatBaldFrank are in the New York City area. Frank reported that he had been tweeting about the subject for the past 2 days.  As of this blog posting none of these testers have seen a response from Verizon.  I’ve asked my friends to post comments here if they get any responses.

    This could also backfire on Verizon if only one region in the company is actively engaging on Twitter. It highlights the need to have a national social media policy in place when you’re as big of a company as Verizon.

    Helen,
    A single region could be used as a demonstration to others on the effectiveness of social media outreach in a case like this.
    I’m not sure I understand how it could backfire. The only downside to other areas not taking advantage of the effort is their failure to gather new customers.
