Musings on the 140 Conference

April 27th, 2010 · No Comments

The 140 Conference NYC was last week and I’ve finally gotten over the must do’s that were put off last week.  Now I’m on to the merely over due’s like this blog post.

Impressions of the conference:

·         It’s unlike any other conference or event I’ve ever been to in my 20+ years of marketing and conference going.  I’ve been to many conferences over the years and 140 is unlike anything else.  It’s hard to explain.  It’s a little bit spiritual and a lot of meeting very nice people, and some great inspiration and some excellent business sense on how to use Social Media effectively.

·         Best quote of the conference, it’s a tie:

o   Randy Granovetter: “I’ve been to a lot of business conferences over the years.  I’ve never been to one where I’ve learned so much and cried all at once.”  (Randy said she cried when Ann Curry (@AnnCurry) was speaking of crimes against women in Africa, and when Luke Renner (@firesideint) spoke about the earthquake relief effort in Haiti.)

o   Anonymous: “Who’s that chick in the Tiara think she is?  Miss America or something?”  Answer: “Yes, as a matter of fact that is Miss America.”  Caressa Cameron (@MAOTravels).

·         It was amazing that all of speakers, important people and celebrities came into the schmooze room to meet anyone who wanted to speak with them.  This extended to MC Hammer and

·         Twitter is one of the few trends in the digital world that was adopted by adults first, and younger people second.  Nearly everything else, Facebook, IM, bulletin boards, and other major online trends.  According to Linda Boland Abraham (@linda_abraham) of comScore.  Watch the CMO panel discussion here.

·         The conference sold out all seats, and was broadcast live for free on the internet.  And it is still available for your viewing pleasure here: http://nyc2010.140conf.com/schedule  This is a great tool because I can review any of the panels I saw and catch the ones I missed.  You can pick and choose which to watch.

·         So far the 140Conf video stream has been viewed by over 120K unique viewers.

·         The new buzz word: ROR = Return on Relationship.  Lots of people in marketing are constantly complaining about how difficult it is to measure ROI (Return On Investment) with social media.  So the social mediaists have invented a couple of twists; ROR- how do you measure the return on a relationship?   The second variation on that theme is ROI= Return On Ignoring- what is the value of you ignoring your customers, or rather the cost?

·         Looking for something different?  Check out the comedy panel for a discussion on funny twitter stuff.
