Google is changing Display URL Rules- Again!

February 19th, 2008 · No Comments

Google released an announcement today to all advertisers that they are changing the allowable display URL parameter in ads. What does this mean? If you are running Google ads today you need to check with your PPC manager to be sure your ads will keep running after April 1st otherwise known as April Fools Day!?! (I don’t think this is a cleaver joke. Yes Google is known for their April Fools Day jokes but this isn’t one.)

What’s the change? (the semi-technical version) You used to be able to have an ad point to a domain name which was just a parking domain. This is done by people who want to have multiple web site names but have them all land on the same place.

  • www.Gizmos-North.comgizmos ads
  • www.Gizmos-South.com
  • All above actually point to: www.Uber-Gizmos.com

People in the North think you’ve got a Northern Gizmos website just for them. It’s a little deceitful, but depending on your business it worked. It made it easy for multi-location operations to not need a different web site for each location, while still addressing local traffic.

The problem here is that with some people when you give them an inch they take a mile. So some people abused it, and made it look like they had multiple locations when they didn’t. And there are other ways people abused it that I won’t go into here. Suffice it to say that them jerks ruined it for the rest of us.

The BOTTOM LINE? Check your ads to be sure they will work after April Fools day, no foolin’. If you need some help, why don’t you give me a call?

Tanks for reading,

Chris
