The Connections Are Out There

Subtitle- Pitches Make me Wince

BLUF- Don’t pitch the A List Bloggers. Pitch the B, C, & D List Bloggers because their blog posts will pitch the A Listers for you. Judo-like take your opponents strength and use it against him…

On the World Wide Web today there exactly 23.764875 Billion people, (source: The White House). There are 150+ Million blogs, 1000’s of news sites, news aggregators and other types of, “you can get all right here” kinds of sites. And most of them DON’T get pitched something every day.

As an illustration on Twitter today I received a pitch that went this way,

Hey man, any chance you want to give me a shout out? I’m brand new to twitter and would like more people to interact with! Thanks

Now I don’t know this person. I did look at his site, his blog and a few other links. I determined that it’s not a spammer masquerading as a real person. But it is someone who just doesn’t get it, just like so many PR people today.Great Blogs of Fire

This blog is moderately successful, I’VE got a few who read it regularly. But more importantly it gets links from other much more important blogs. Geoff Livingston, has listed me in his Great Blogs of Fire twice this year. And why? Because I wrote content that was meaningful and informative about something that interests me. Why did I write about these things? Because they interest me. Why did I write it well? Because it interests me.

Do you notice a theme here? I blog because I like to, and I like the attention it brings me. (Yes I’m a sucker for attention- only child syndrome) So I write about what I want to. There isn’t a pitch in the world that will get me writing about something I don’t like. But if you’re in my sweet spot I just might write about you all on my own- Animoto.

But I’ve digressed- back to main subject. With three hundred and fifty gazabijillion blogs, aggregators and other sites there is no reason for PR flacks and Marketers to try to pitch the Top 10%. You’re going against the tide. Find 10 bloggers in the B or C lists to write about you. Then one of the A listers will pick it up and reprint it or link to it.

The idea is Judo-like, take your opponent’s strength, in this case the A List Bloggers Filters and turn it against them, by getting B list bloggers to break through those filters for you.

  1. B, C & D List Bloggers are much easier to reach, many of use will be honored just to have received a pitch.
  2. Because you will find targets in your sweet spot it’s a much easier sell.
  3. You can get 5 B List bloggers for the effort you put into 1 A Lister.
  4. B List Blog Readers are a more focused demographic than the coveted A Listers.
  5. A story that is written well, by someone who is knowledgeable and who loves their topic is always more persuasive.
  6. Where do you think A List Bloggers get their ideas? Often it’s the B List Blogs they read.
  7. Use the B List Blog Posts as a stepping stone, and door opener for the A Lists if you still need to pitch them.

Now back to my new Twitter friend, how did I answer him?

Instead why don’t you say something that I can make into a joke or something? Pitches always make me wince.

    With all the numbers of people on the Web… blah, blah, blah. Just kidding.

    Also took your advice and jumped over to the Blogs of Fire entry and liked it.

    Both you and he have some chops and insight.

    Keep it up. I told him that I don’t qualify for a ‘blogs of fire’ rating but maybe some of my entries should show up as ‘posts of fire’.

    Like the one that John C. Dvorak quoted on the front page of his blog last night.

    You’re right about the A vs B, C, D blogger thing. Attracting us low-level bloggers is easier, but ya PR folk (don’t worry, I’m one of ‘em, too) still gotta be on topic. Check the blog before you email the blogger.

    Chris, I like your perspective on this. I’m in the similar position of being mostly off the radar.

    Which makes me ask the question, how does PR discover the B, C, D, and J list bloggers?

    Twitter is certainly one source but that has some definite demographic skews. So what do you do if you’re looking to pitch past the mainstream blogs?
    I’m sure there are answers out there, I’m interested in what they are.

    John, twitter is a good way to meet the non-Aers. I follow conversations, which tend to keep me in a field. For example, if I am interested in the latest smartphone release, I find a friend who tends to talk tech and look at the conversations around that friend.

    Also, lots of blogging directories out there. Also, check comments. I’ve met awesome people that way.
